Forest plantations may minimize the effects of deforestation in the Amazon. However, there are differences among species in terms of their influences on soil recovery. The effects of monospecific plantations of Acacia mangium, Dipteryx odorata, Jacaranda copaia, Parkia decussata, and Swietenia macrophylla, and areas of pasture and native forest on the chemical soil attributes of the Brazilian Amazon were evaluated. One bulked soil sample was collected per plot (0.00-0.05, 0.05-0.10, and 0.10-0.30 m; three plots of 128 m2) in each area. No significant differences in most of the soil attributes were observed among the forest plantations. However, soil K+ and P were higher in the Swietenia macrophylla plantations, while higher values of Ca2+, sum of bases, and... |

This study aimed to compare three sampling methods: fixed area, Bitterlich, and Prodan, regarding accuracy and relative efficiency to estimate the variables: diameter at 1.30 m above soil level (DBH), number of trees, basal area, and volume. The limit of error established was 10% at probability level of 95%, using 30 plots for each method. Circumference at 1.30 m above soil level was measured, for conversion in DBH, with total time counted since the plots installation until the last tree measured. The most accurate sampling was the fixed area method, for estimation of DBH and number of trees per hectare, whereas the Bitterlich method was the most accurate for estimation of basal area and volume. Bitterlich method proved to be more efficient for estimation... |

Research on the ability of tropical soils to support fast-growing forests species is required to optimize, preserve and select lands for timber production. In this work site index (SI) of Eucalyptus grandis and E. urophylla plantations in Southeastern Mexico, was related to chemical and physical soil properties. Based on a joint model of SI vs. sand content, the fit suggests that SI improves as the sand content increases (p<0.01). Sand content of 28% in the surface soil (0-5 cm) and 24% in the sub-surface soil (5-30 cm) is a desired minimum for establishing highly productive stands. The best SI conditions were found on sandy soils with a sand content of 65 %. Other variables, such as soil bulk density, N mineralization and organic matter were also... |

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different chemical control of alternative weed in soil fauna in initial planting of Eucalyptus grandis. The treatments consisted of partial and full control of the weed vegetation. Collections were conducted through soil trap (pitfall). We collected 26,136 specimens, distributed in 13 taxonomic groups (Araneae, Blattodea, Chilopoda, Collembola, Coleoptera, Diplopoda, Diptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, Termitoidea, Orthoptera, Opilione and young forms). The treatments with remaining weed vegetation presented higher values of evaluated indices. |

For many years, tropical and subtropical forests have been deforested for agriculture, grazing, and timber extraction. Nevertheless in the last decade, several publications have suggested that some regions of Latin America are showing a process of forest transition. Forest transition theory predicts that industrialization and urbanization will lead to the abandonment of marginal agriculture lands and the recovery of natural systems such as forests. However, there are many ecological, economic, and social factors that could act as barriers to ecosystem recovery. To evaluate this hypothesis, we analyzed the socioeconomic and land-use changes during the last 30 years at the provincial and departmental level in the province of Misiones, Argentina. We... |
